Who Was Dr. Kamal Ranadive? Google Doodle Honors Indian Biologist
This Monday Google will pay tribute to the scientist who was one of the very first researchers in India to find links between certain cancers and viruses.

The search engine honored The Dr. Kamal Ranadive with a Google Doodle depicting biologist Dr. Kamal Ranadive using the microscope, and with various elements of the Google logo depicted by microscopy slides with cells.
According to an announcement from Ibrahim Rayintakath, the Indian artist who created the doodle, "My main source of inspiration was lab aesthetics from the late 20th century and the microscopic world of cells related to leprosy and cancer."
According to the biographical sketch on Google's site, Ranadive would have celebrated her birthday on Monday.
She born in 1917 the Ranadive received the doctorate degree in cytology,
which is the study of cells as a researcher in the Indian Cancer Research Center. While she was Director of the Center she was not just one of the first scientists to discover the connections between cancers and viruses, but she was one of the first researchers to suggest a connection between heredity and breast cancer.
Ranadive was also a researcher of the leprosy-causing bacterium and also helped in the development of a leprosy vaccine. She was a pioneer in 1973 when she was instrumental in helping in the creation of an Indian Women Scientists' Association in order to assist women who are pursuing careers in science.
The sketch on the Dr Ranadive is the illustration by illustrator Ibrahim Rayintakath. The artist stated that he was able to dig into Dr . Ranadive's life and work, in order to appreciate her talent in the field. "Not just work but also how she was as a person, which wouldn't have crossed me otherwise," the artist said.

Dr. Ranadive was born in Pune on the 8th of November 1917.
- Although her father had been encouraging her to pursue an academic career in medicine but she chose to pursue a career in biology and eventually earned her doctorate in the field of cytology (the research of the cell) at the age of 49. The feat was accomplished while working as an expert researcher in the Indian Cancer Research Center.
- Dr Ranadive was then able to complete her research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, United States, after which she returned to India and rejoined the ICRC.
- Dr. Ranadive founded India's first tissue culture lab at the ICRC.
- Her name was one of the very first researchers in the United States to establish a link between heredity and breast cancer and the connection between certain viruses and cancer.
- She also assisted on the creation of a Mycobacterium leprae, the bacteria which causes leprosy.
- She was born in 1973. In that year, she established the Indie Women Scientists' Association along with her 11 coworkers. This initiative aims to assist women in a variety of scientific fields.
